Today's Reading - May 19, 2010

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44
John 10:22-42
Psalm 116:1-19
Proverbs 15:20-21

Question of the day: Were Abigail's actions commendable, even though they went against the wishes of her husband? Doesn't the Bible tells us that he has authority over her as her husband?

God has made it clear that when a husband is in opposition to God, he has given up authority over his wife. Abigail did what she knew to be right, and God blessed David through her actions.

  1. Where has God made that clear? Can you site a reference?

Maybe Nabal the foolish was thinking of Ahimelech the priest, who, along with 85 men + women and children, were killed by Saul for giving bread to David. Maybe he was trying to protect his family.
I looked like it turned out ok, but after Abigail and David had their first child, they named him, "Daniel", meaning, "God is my judge". Had they learned something?

  2. God placed the husband as the head of the family, just as he created other positions of authority in society. When a husband has misused his authority by disobeying the law, passages such as Romans 13:1-5 and James 5:19-20 tell us how he should be held accountable. Being placed in authority is not a license to act as one wishes.
