Today's Reading - January 13, 2010

GENESIS 28:1-29:35
MATTHEW 9:18-38
PSALM 11:1-7
PROVERBS 3:11-12

How could Jacob have possibly not noticed that it was Leah on the wedding night, and not Rachel?

Jacob, no stranger to deception, had as cruel a trick played on him as he had played on Esau. Laban no doubt engineered, with Leah's help, a wedding night scenario that would lend itself to fooling Jacob.

Jacob had no reason to expect deception; his wife was brought in under the cover of darkness; Leah was, no doubt, veiled; she may have very closely physically resembled her sister; conversation could have been whispered; reticence on the bride's part would have been understandable and Jacob's infatuation may have caused him to welcome his new bride with reckless abandon.
