Today's Reading - January 15, 2010

GENESIS 31:17-32:12
MATTHEW 10:24-11:6
PSALM 13:1-6
PROVERBS 3:16-18

Question of the Day: In Matthew 10:34, Jesus says that he did not come to bring peace to the earth, but a sword. How does that square with the angels at Jesus' birth singing about peace on earth?

The Jews believed that one of the features of the Day of the Lord was that families would be split up and pitted one against the other. Jesus was acknowledging that day had arrived, and he was bringing warfare between those who believed and those who didn't. The angels sang, in fact, that there would peace to men on whom his favor rests. Those who believe and obeyed would experience the peace that passes understanding with being a follower of Jesus.
