Today's Reading - January 19, 2010

Genesis 39:1-41:16
Matthew 12:46-13:23
Psalm 17:1-15
Proverbs 3:33-35

Question of the day: Was Joseph punished for his arrogance toward his brothers?

Joseph had been gifted by God the ability to interpret dreams. This gift was misinterpreted by others as arrogance, and as a result, his brothers treated him harshly. In this passage, we see Joseph being thrown into jail unjustly by Potiphar, but we see God protecting Joseph through it.

  1. Yesterday I had the following questions:

Do you think Joseph was spoiled and arrogant?
Do you think Joseph flaunted his favor and provoked his brothers?
Do you think Joseph was just nieve?

Perhaps he deserved the injustice of being sold into slavery but that would presume that God was unaware of Joseph's character, conduct and future. More likely it was God's intention to put Joseph where he needed to be. My question is this: Given the apparent character of his brothers (or lack there of), where did Joseph develop his character? Was it from Jacob? It isn't clear. What is clear is that his character was greater than his brothers and God's hand was with him. It is true that Joseph was able to interpret dreams from an early age and was a precursor to the future but the ability to interpret dreams means little if it is not accompanied by character. Somewhere Joseph learned to trust God in all things. Somewhere he developed a discipline a commitment to stand on principle regardless of the consequences. I just wonder where his brothers were when the lessons were being taught. Then again how often do we miss the lessons each day? Character is developed and earned not gifted.
