Today's Reading - January 14, 2010

GENESIS 30:1-31:16
MATTHEW 10:1-23
PSALM 12:1-8
PROVERBS 3:13-15

Question of the Day: When Jesus said to "shake its dust from your feet as you leave" is any town refused to listen to them, wasn't he in effect saying that you only get one chance, and if you blow it, then too bad for you?

To the Jew, the dust of a Gentile place or road was defiling, therefore a Jew would physically "shake its dust from your feet" to remove the offensive dust. Jesus had already instructed the disciples to not go to any Gentile towns, but rather to the Jews. The message of the messiah was one for people of Israel at this time, and if any Jews rejected the news of the messiah, then were to be treated as Gentiles.

The extension of this message is that time is short, and you had better accept it while you can, because who knows about tomorrow?
