Today's Reading - January 31, 2010

EXODUS 12:14-13:16
MATTHEW 20:29-21:22
PSALM 25:16-22
PROVERBS 6:12-15

Question of the day: Why was Jesus so angry at the fig tree for having no figs?

The tree was not punished by Jesus for not bearing fruit. Since the time of year that Jesus passed by the tree was in April, the tree shouldn't have had fruit. Moreover, it shouldn't have had leaves, so there was something wrong with the tree. Jesus was making a statement about the future of the tree, rather than punishing it. That it withered immediately leads one to wonder if Jesus was using the occasion to teach his disciples about appearing to produce fruit, but in fact being fruitless. If your life is to be productive, you have to produce, not just appear as if you are.
